# Purge settings on the NextSeq 1000/2000

Users can choose to purge reagents from the cartridge once a run completes. Purging reagents will move the remaining contents from the reagent cartridge to the spent reagents compartment.

1. From the control software menu, select **Settings**.
2. Choose whether the system automatically purges unused reagents to the spent reagents compartment after each run to streamline waste disposal after run completion:

* To purge automatically, select the **Purge Reagent Cartridge** checkbox\*.
* To skip automatic purging, deselect the **Purge Reagent Cartridge** checkbox (this is the default setting). ![](/files/8xMs1xcFjQW9j1hu6lF4)

3. Select **Save**.

**\***Purging unused reagents adds up to 2 hours to the workflow.\
