# Supported versions of Server Message Block (SMB) on Illumina Platforms

Network connections to servers often use the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol to mediate data transfers throughout the network. Illumina platforms using Windows 10 natively support connections using SMB v2 and v3.

Due to security concerns, SMB v1 has been disabled on Illumina platforms running Windows 10. If the desired network server uses SMB v1, Illumina platforms running Windows 10 will not be able to connect to this network location without first enabling SMB v1.

If a server connection requires SMB v1, contact [Illumina Technical Support](https://www.illumina.com/company/contact-us.html#/united-states/technical-support) for assistance.
