# How to add new Control Software users on the NovaSeq X Series

**Background**

The NovaSeq X Series requires user authentication when logging into the Control Software to perform normal sequencing run operations, as well as Control Software configuration tasks. See the following instructions for adding new user accounts to the NovaSeq X Series Control Software.

**How to add a new Control Software User**

1. Select the instrument icon to open the global navigation menu.
2. Select **Settings**, and then select **Users**.
3. Select **Add user**.
4. Enter the following information:

* User name
* First name
* Last name

5. Select the **User enabled** checkbox to set the user status as **Active**. Only active users can sign into the instrument.
6. Enter a temporary password. Temporary passwords cannot be reused.

* The user changes the password when they first sign in. Refer to the section below "Password Requirements" for password recommendations.

7. To add a user as an Administrator, select the **Administrators**checkbox.

* To make sure that the Administrator can access all permissions, leave the *Sequencing Operators* checkbox selected.

8. Select **Save** when finished.

**Password Requirements**

Password Length: 8-64 characters\
Minimum password character requirements:

* One upper case
* One lower case
* One numerical character
* One special character

Password History: Cannot match the previous five passwords
