# Using expired reagents on the NovaSeq X Series

**Background**

The NovaSeq X Series Control Software checks the reagent expiration dates when the RFID is read and consumables verified. If the reagents are past the expiration date, the Control Software presents a notification to the user.

For instruments on **Control Software v1.3** and above, runs can be initiated even if expired reagents are used. When starting a run with expired reagents, the Control Software displays a warning notification. Users must acknowledge this notification to proceed with the run setup.

Although NovaSeq X Series instruments on Control Software v1.3 and above allow the use of expired reagents, Illumina does not support or recommend this practice as run performance cannot be guaranteed.

For instruments running **Control Software v1.2.2** and below, runs cannot be started if expired reagents are detected.
