# How to properly configure Decode File Client for networks using proxy servers

To properly configure Decode File Client for use on networks that require a proxy server, follow the steps below. **Note**: These instructions apply to Decode File Client v3.0.5.

1. Verify access to the required Amazon S3 URLs and IP addresses. Refer to the Illumina Knowledge article [Decode File Client Troubleshooting Guide](/microarray/decode-file-client-software/microarray-decode-file-client-software-troubleshooting-list/000001426.md) for the complete list of required endpoints.
2. Re-configure the config file for Decode File Client to enable it to work with proxy servers as described below. This requires admin access for the computer.
   1. Contact Illumina Technical Support at <techsupport@illumina.com> to obtain the *DmapFileWebServiceClient.exe.config\_proxymod (DFC v3.0.5).txt* file.
   2. Open the file and search for the placeholder text (without the quotes): "ENTERPROXYADDRESSHERE"
   3. Replace this placeholder text with the appropriate proxy server address for the site.
   4. Save the updated file on the Desktop.
   5. Navigate to the current config file in the DFC folder: C:\Program Files\Illumina\Illumina Decode File Client\DmapFileWebServiceClient.exe.config
   6. Move the original config file out of the Illumina Decode File Client directory.
   7. Move this file to the Desktop for safe keeping while validating the new config file.
   8. Move the newly updated proxymod config file into this same location (C:\Program Files\Illumina\Illumina Decode File Client).
   9. Remove '\_proxymod (DFC v3.0.5)' from the file name of the updated config file. The file must have the exact same name as the original configuration file, and saved in the exact same location.
   10. Launch Decode File Client and try to download the DMAP Files.

**Additional Information**

* It may take multiple attempts to determine the correct proxy address. If the initial configuration is unsuccessful, consult the local IT team for an alternative proxy address. In some environments, the standard proxy address did not work but the local IT has been able to provide a site-specific proxy address that worked.
* Since going through a proxy server may delay the communication time, the proxy modification configured version of the config file increases the timeout setting from 3 minutes to 10 minutes.

**Note:** Decode File Client does not support the use of explicit Username and Password credentials within its proxy configuration settings.
