# Troubleshooting Filesystem type exFAT not configured in kernel message on the NextSeq 1000/2000

Solid State drives for external data storage may be formatted as an exFAT system. However, this format is incompatible with the NextSeq 1000/2000, and attempting to mount such a drive will result in errors such as "Unable to access drive, Filesystem type exfat not configured in kernel."

Reformat exFAT-formatted drives to the compatible format NTFS to allow the drive to be mounted correctly on the NextSeq 1000/2000.

**To reformat a drive:**

1. Transfer the drive to a Windows computer.
2. Right-click the drive in a file explorer window.
3. Select **Format**.
4. Follow the prompts to format the drive as NTFS.
5. Reconnect the drive to NTFS and mount the drive as explained in the Knowledge Article [Networking and output locations on the NextSeq 1000/2000](https://knowledge.illumina.com/instrumentation/nextseq-1000-2000/instrumentation-nextseq-1000-2000-reference_material-list/000003037/?utm_source=agent\&utm_medium=email\&utm_campaign=kb)
