# How to troubleshoot Insufficient Memory errors during Pre Run Checks on the NovaSeq X Series Instruments

**Background**

Before starting a run, the Pre-Run Checks verify that the instrument is ready to perform a sequencing run and are split between the Dry and Wet checks. If the instrument does not have sufficient memory available to perform all of the necessary software actions during these Checks, it will present the following error:

![](/files/yBB9XKjyaxdcThIuwNMl)

**Figure 1:** Pre-Run Checks Errors - Insufficient memory to continue the execution of the program.

If the Pre-Run Checks are in the **Dry Checks** phase when the error occurs, the **consumables will not be marked as used** and are safe to be used in a follow up sequencing run.

If the Pre-Run Checks are in **Wet Checks** phase when the error occurs, the **Flow Cell and Buffer Cartridge will be marked as used** and new Flow cell and Buffer consumables will be required for a follow up sequencing run.

If this issue is observed, see the following steps to troubleshoot this issue.

**Troubleshooting Actions**

**IMPORTANT NOTE**: this issue is distinct from insufficient storage space and deleting sequencing runs will NOT resolve this issue. For issues with insufficient storage, see [Troubleshooting Insufficient Storage Space Errors during Pre-Run Checks on the NovaSeq X Series](/instrumentation/novaseq-x-x-plus/instrumentation-novaseq-x-x-plus-reference_material-list/000007797.md).

1. Within the Control Software, select **Return to Start** to exit the Pre-Run Checks.
2. Power cycle the instrument according to Control Software version guidelines listed in the [How to power cycle the NovaSeq X Series Instruments](https://knowledge.illumina.com/instrumentation/novaseq-x-x-plus/instrumentation-novaseq-x-x-plus-reference_material-list/000007478) Knowledge Article.
3. Once the instrument has restarted and the Control Software is initialized, proceed with repeating the sequencing run setup.

If the issue persists, contact [Illumina Tech Support](https://www.illumina.com/company/contact-us.html) for further assistance.
