# Troubleshooting '\[XYZ] encountered an exception on the IX server' errors on the MiSeq i100 Series

**Background**

The MiSeq i100 Series establishes an internal network to connect the onboard computer with the control boards on the instrument. If the connection between the computer and a board is interrupted, the instrument Control Software displays the following Critical System Error:

![](/files/vsdc9LeiuMVUs6HumV4L)

Critical System Error: '\[XYZ] encountered an exception on the IX server'

In this error message, \[XYZ] is the acronym for the specific control board that lost connection to the onboard computer.

If this error presents, please see the following **Troubleshooting Actions**.

**Troubleshooting Actions**

1. On the Critical System Error page, select **Shutdown** to power down the instrument.
   1. Once powered down, toggle the **power switch** on the back of the instrument to **OFF** and leave instrument off for 2 minutes.
   2. Toggle the power switch to **ON**, then press the power button on the **front-right corner** of the instrument.
   3. See Knowledge Article [How to Power Cycle the MiSeq i100 Series](/instrumentation/miseq-i100-series/instrumentation-miseq-i100-series-reference_material-list/000009277.md) for additional details if needed.
2. After instrument boots, monitor **Control Software** for successful initialization.
3. If instrument initializes as expected, continue with a normal workflow.

If the instrument fails to initialize and continues to present Critical System Error: '\[XYZ] encountered an exception on the IX server' messages, contact [Illumina Tech Support](https://www.illumina.com/company/contact-us.html).
